Castellana Caves
The Castellana Caves are a complex of underground cavities considered the most spectacular in Italy. They are located in the municipality of Castellana-Grotte, in the province of Bari, at the gateway to the Valle d'Itria, 330 meters above sea level on the limestone plateau formed in the Upper Cretaceous, about ninety to one hundred million years ago. Developed over a length of 348 metres and reaching a maximum depth of 122 metres from the surface, the beauty of these caves attracts visitors from all over the world. The visit to the caves winds along a path of 3 km, an extraordinary guided hike, about 70 meters deep, in an amazing scenery. A few kilometers from the caves are some of the most enchanting villages in the area, such as Alberobello, Cisternino and Polignano a Mare.
