Pisa Cathedral
Also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, it is one of the greatest masterpieces of Romanesque architecture, in which Lombard-Emilian, classical, late antique, Byzantine, Ravenna and Arab stylistic elements blend together. It was built as a symbol of the Pisan Maritime Republic at the height of its power. Inside there are works of great value among which stand out the Mosaic of the apse basin depicting Christ between the Virgin and St. John (Cimabue), the Sarcophagus of Arrigo VII, the work of Tino da Camaino and the pulpit of Giovanni Pisano. Some epigraphs on the facade celebrate Pisan naval feats and on the apse stands the copy of the bronze griffin of Islamic manufacture of the eleventh century, spoils of war in Spain. Among the figures in bas-relief on the front door, there is a lizard: it is said to bring good luck and for this reason is caressed by the students on the opening day of the academic year.
