This is the main park of the city of Bologna, it covers 26 hectares and contains numerous species of plants, including linden trees, oaks, horse chestnuts and plane trees. Entering the park, you will find yourself in front of the statue of Vittorio Emanuele II, which was once exposed in Piazza Maggiore. Going along the road that remains on the right you can cross one of the many tree-lined sections that make up the park, arriving at a lake where circular fountains have been installed. Right on the lake there is the Chalet dei Giardini: a refreshment point from which you can enjoy the view of the artificial basin fed by the Savena river, while on the other side of it there is a large lawn. The gardens were built on a project by Ernesto di Sambuy, inaugurated in 1879 and named in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy, since she had visited the city the year before. During the works an Etruscan necropolis was discovered, whose finds are exhibited at the Civic Archaeological Museum of Bologna. Previously, in 1874, the Municipality of Bologna had bought from a private individual the ground to build the park.
