The Moline canal is part of the network of Bologna's hydraulic canals, which were built around the 12th century to bring water throughout the city, making it flow from the Reno river to the west and Savena river to the east. The position close to the Bologna hills favored the arrival of water in the city. This canal is the second branch of the Reno canal and begins after the derivation of the Cavaticcio and beyond via Indipendenza. After the stretch exposed outdoors, it joins the Aposa stream, which flows under the center of the city, and then flows into the Navile canal. It was built to provide the hydraulic energy that could move hundreds of shovels that fed the numerous silk mills, rice piles and many other manufactures. The frame of this stretch with the houses that directly overlook the small canal create the conditions for dubbing this place "the little Venice".
