Rocchetta Mattei (Bologna)
On the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines a strange castle rises, which seems to come from the East. It is called Rocchetta Mattei and was the residence of Count Cesare Mattei, a man who became famous for his skills in the medical field. The style is the true characteristic of this fortress: it mixes the Moorish with medieval and modern Italian architecture.
The building was erected in 1850 on an ancient medieval complex that belonged to Frederick the Barbarossa and Otto IV and soon became the court, in medieval style, of Count Mattei. The count used to host illustrious people who wanted to undergo his medical treatment based on homeopathy. In 2006 it was purchased by the Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna and in 2015, after restoration work, it resumed its opening to the public.
The most evocative interiors are the Cortile dei Leoni, inspired by the Alhambra of Granada, the chapel, whose style imitates the Cathedral of Cordoba, and the Salone dei Novanta.
