Piazza della Santissima Annunziata (Florence)

Piazza della Santissima Annunziata is a famous square located in the center of Florence, a few steps from the Duomo. It is considered one of the greatest expressions of the Florentine Renaissance, being able to host inside some buildings and works of absolute value and prestige.
The name is taken from the nearby Church of Santissima Annunziata, which houses a painting dating back to the twelfth century depicting the Annunciation. It is precisely this painting that has historically been the destination of pilgrims, a factor that has contributed to the development of the square itself.
One of the most characteristic buildings of the square is the Spedale degli Innocenti, one of the first Renaissance works by Brunelleschi and the first orphanage in Europe, built from 1419 onwards. Within the same context we can find the Confraternita dei Servi di Maria, built in 1525 by Antonio Sangallo il Vecchio and Baccio d’Agnolo; here you can also admire the equestrian statue of Grand Duke Ferdinando I, by Giambologna. In the centre of the square, instead, as proof of its perfect symmetry, there are two bronze fountains made in baroque style by Pietro Tacca.
Piazza della Santissima Annunziata still hosts the ancient Epiphany market.
