Natural History Museum (Florence)
The Natural History Museum of Florence is one of the oldest and most important museums in Europe and one of the largest and most important science museums in Italy. It belongs to the University of Florence and can claim a collection of over ten million exhibits.
The historical origin of the museum dates back to 1775, when Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo established the Royal Museum of Physics and Natural History at Palazzo Torrigiani in Via Romana and collected a series of naturalistic collections dating back to the Medici era and until then preserved in the Uffizi.
Today the exhibition boasts an impressive collection and the various sections of the museum cultivate collaborative relationships with various scientific departments and foreign institutions, as well as being active in the field of conservation, restoration, scientific research and teaching.
The Natural History Museum is now part of a museum system organized on multiple exhibition sites with scientific themes, housed in various buildings in the city.
