Piazza della Signoria (Florence)

Piazza della Signoria in Florence, the square where Palazzo Vecchio overlooks, is one of the most famous and suggestive squares in Italy. This place has been the stage for centuries for many historical events that took place in the Tuscan chief town, such as the killing at the stake of Girolamo Savonarola in 1497 and the subsequent triumphant return of the De’ Medici family in 1530.
Inside the square it is possible to admire numerous marble sculptures depicting the political events of the city, including the Fountain of Neptune, Hercules and Cacus, as well as the complex housed inside the Loggia dei Lanzi. Also designed for Piazza della Signoria was the famous David by Michelangelo, now preserved in its original work in the Galleria dell’Accademia.
Overlooking this square are also some famous medieval buildings such as Palazzo Uguccioni, the Tribunale della Mercanzia and, of course, Palazzo Vecchio, still today the seat of the Florentine municipality. Moreover, from this place you can easily reach the famous Uffizi Gallery.
