Frosini (Siena)

Frosini is a small village located about halfway between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. The main characteristic of this hamlet in the municipality of Chiusdino is its characteristic castle.
The castle of Frosini appears for the first time in a document of 1004 where a act of donation was reported, so the structure has almost certainly early medieval origins. Today the original style is difficult to find due to the numerous restorations that have taken place over the years.
Local legend speaks of apparitions of a ghost somehow linked to the plague epidemic that struck central Italy in the 14th century.
Within a few months of its apparition all the inhabitants of the castle of Frosini and its neighbouring villages had died of the terrible evil. Only a man named Ilario Brandani seemed to be able to escape the disease. Rationally Brandani had taken refuge and locked himself inside the fortress of Frosini and here he could not be infected. In order to escape the incurable plague, legend has it that he had been locked up in the castle for years and years.
