Archiginnasio (Bologna)

The Archiginnasio of Bologna is located in the homonymous street and overlooks the east side of the Basilica of San Petronio. Today this place is the seat of the Archiginnasio Municipal Library and contains about 35,000 manuscripts and ancient books (incunabula), while until 1803 it was the seat of the University of Bologna.
Its construction was ordered by Pope Pius IV and commissioned to the architect Antonio Morandi who completed the structure in 1563.
Entering the Archiginnasio you are facing a courtyard enclosed by a two-storey structure. Along the corridors surrounding the courtyard you can admire the largest heraldic mural complex in the world: about six thousand coats of arms represent personalities (students and professors) who attended the Archiginnasio.
In this structure there is the anatomical theatre, a classroom of 1637 built in fir wood and used for anatomy lessons. Among the numerous decorations there are the statues of Hippocrates, Galen and the Bolognese doctor Gaspare Tagliacozzi.
