Bridge of Mary Magdalene (Lucca)

This bridge was built in the eleventh century by the will of Countess Matilde di Canossa to join the banks of the river Serchio near Borgo a Mozzano.
Its architecture is very interesting: the walkway is increasing in height, if you start from the east bank, for three quarters of the length and, arrived at the half of the largest arch, back down with a slope greater than the initial one.
The first part of the west side was modified in the early ‘900 to make space for the railway.
Several legends are attributed to the bridge, also known as the “Devil’s Bridge”. The most common tells that the head of the works who, worried about the great delays in construction, invoked the help of Satan, who offered him his help in exchange for the soul of the first person who would cross the bridge. The man accepted but deceived the devil by letting a dog cross the bridge. Lucifer then got angry and disappeared, diving into the river. Story goes that some nights you can see that dog walking looking for the site manager: it would be the devil who wants to take his soul.
