Nice place 113 – Fontebranda (Siena)

Fontebranda is the largest water source you can find in the city of Siena, located in the center, within the territory of the Nobile Contrada dell’Oca.
The oldest documents that mention the source date back to 1081, but over the years the original structure has changed, following the expansion at the end of the twelfth century and the restructuring carried out by Giovanni Di Stefano in 1246, who rebuilt it in brick and travertine, giving it its current appearance.
The work is mentioned in numerous writings by many important Italian authors, such as Vittorio Alfieri and even Dante Alighieri in his famous “Divine Comedy”. The fame of the Fountain is also due to St. Catherine of Siena, who was born near Fontebranda, which is why it is also called “Santa di Fontebranda” (Saint of Fontebranda).
