Nice place 86 – Vasari Corridor (Florence)

The Vasari Corridor is a route of about 1 km that connects Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery with Palazzo Pitti. Today the Corridor has lost its original function of internal passage between the two buildings and it is a small museum apart from the famous Gallery. The access to the passage is on the first floor of the Uffizi Gallery, behind an almost anonymous door.
Throughout the length of the work you can admire paintings by some of the most famous authors active between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Part of the Corridor contains a series of works damaged following a mafia attack in May 1993, which caused irreparable damage to the Gallery and some paintings.
One of the purposes of the passage, which offers a quiet and sheltered path, as well as offering a breathtaking view, must have been, in the eyes of the Medici, a way to move freely from their residence to Palazzo Vecchio in absolute discretion and security.
