Nice place 78 – Basilica of Santa Croce (Florence, Tuscany)
The Basilica of Santa Croce, located in the homonymous square, was built from the end of 1200, replacing a church not enough to accommodate the faithful. Arnolfo di Cambio worked on it. Its facade, however, remained unfinished until the mid-nineteenth century when it was decided to complete it with a project that was inspired by the Florentine Gothic style.
The Church, entrusted to the Franciscans, like most of the convent buildings, has a cross plan (T shape) with the interior divided into three naves. From the church you then enter the Medici Chapel and from here to the Sacristy, beautifully frescoed. You can also visit the cloisters, one by Arnolfo di Cambio and the other by Brunelleschi and the Cappella de’ Pazzi, designed by Brunelleschi and decorated by Luca della Robbia and Giuliano da Maiano, but remained unfinished after the famous conspiracy that saw the death of Giuliano de’ Medici.
It is the burial place of some of the most illustrious Italian figures, such as Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Niccolò Machiavelli, Vittorio Alfieri, Ugo Foscolo, Gioacchino Rossini, and is therefore known as the Temple of Itale Glorie.
